More than 100 concerned citizens attended an informational meeting about a proposal for the implementation of a single trash-hauling firm contract in Violet Township per the Pickerington Sun-Times. The special meeting was called by the Violet Township Board of Trustees and held in the Pickerington High School North Performing Arts Center on June 14th.
Violet Township Director of Operations John Eisel said the goal of implementing the single-hauler trash concept is to reduce the number of haulers on township roadways to one contracted hauler.
He explained the Ohio Revised Code allows the township to pursue the competitive sealed bid process without having to form a trash district. Forming a trash district is a process which would require a ballot initiative to be implemented, Eisel said.
"We are not forming a trash district," he said.
"Our intent is to finalize the bid documents and competitively bid for trash services," Eisel said.
Having one contracted hauler for the approximately 6,500 customers in the unincorporated areas of Violet Township instead of multiple operators will reduce wear and tear on township roads, create safer and cleaner neighborhoods as well as collectively save township residents money, Eisel said.
"We can become advocates for you as consumers in this process," said Eisel.
There are at least five refuse-hauling companies operating in the township on different days, a practice township officials claim is untenable.
Eisel said once the bid documents are approved, Violet Township will post them online by the first or second week of July at www.violet.oh.us
He said the bids will be due Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. The bids will then be ranked by a review committee comprised of two township residents and technical consultants.
Eisel said the projected date of implementation for the single trash-hauler plan is April 1, 2017.
